MotorTrike "New Driveshaft" issue. Green unit

New Drive Shaft fit

To all that have a new Green driveshaft head.

Does your green unit fit tight up to the ring on the output shaft?

I was told by dealer that the 1800 & 1500 are the same unit. Are the output splines the same?

I think you'd have to have both side x side to count/measure the splines. I checked Honda's parts fiche, different part #'s for the output shafts, totally different styles of u-joints.

Can you take your old u-joint and the new green one to the dealer to show him the difference in measurements? That would seem the only way to convince him of a bad fit.

Hope you can get this worked out soon, fall color rides should be happening quickly.

New Shaft from MT

Just received an Email from MT, They are sending a new "Green" head unit to me so we will see. They said they will make sure it fits an 1800 spline before shipping.

Will keep you posted ...

New Green unit

Received new Green unit from MotorTrike. Everything went together as it should in approximately 10 min. Yippeee! Will take for a ride Thursday to see if balanced as it should be.

Thanks for all the help

New Driveshaft

If the tires are good and balanced, you will probably not believe how smooth it rides.

Wow what a difference! Put over 500 miles in a couple of days and all is well.

MT very apologetic but no call tag with the replacement unit.

The location of the grease zerk does not line up with hole on side, but I prefer to get under trike for greasing u joints, that way I can check out the under-side for any issues.

You might look in with a flashlight. If it helps, the rear brake m/c can easily be unbolted and shifted forward or aft for more access. If others are able to get a grease gun on theirs, its probably their zerk is in a little bit different position. 2001-05 have a shorter output shaft coming out of the motor so the u-joint is moved more forward. On the 2006+ Wings, the output shaft is longer, thus the u-joint sits further back.

Hopefully you lubed it prior to installing your shaft assembly. Also, the u-joints need to be in time (or phase) with each other. I think your shaft comes already phased. If not, this guy describes it well.

The new "green" driveshaft has a double tooth on the slide, it's now impossible to install it out of phase.

thanks

Just done mine to-day.

I have an '05 Wing with an '06 MT straight axle with the updated driveshaft and had the same problem. So last time I removed the driveshaft to grease the u-joint and splines, I replaced the front u-joint zerk with a 45 degree one. I made certain the zerk was pointing in the 4:00-5:00 direction when tightened. Now I can easily grease the front u-joint when the right side cover is removed.

Just greased my drive shaft to-day. I do this every other oil change this time I found the coupling to be nearly dry . Good Idea to set the grease nipple at an angle. I will have to see how it works next time. The job isn't too hard as I have an inspection pit dug in the garden. Handy for all sorts of jobs on the trike or vehicles.
