Hello All. I went for a fantastic Freewheeler ride today after dinner. It was 60 & sunny,

I got home & checked for error coded (a weekly PM) and found one I can't identify.

ECM-P0522 with P/N 001349-01

I tried searching with no luck. The trike seemed like it was running fine with no lights I saw.

Can anyone help?

The ECM P0522 is the universal OBD-II code for Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Low Voltage. If your oil level is fine, you may have a faulty sensor, it is not all that uncommon. Have your dealer check and replace it if needed.

The P/N 001349-01 code has to do with lost communication with a control section. It could have stored this code when you changed your grips. Clear the codes and you should be fine.

Michael, after clearing the code see if it comes back on

Mine showed an error code for my oil pressure sender once

I checked pressure with a master gauge it was fine, the code never came back

That was 5k miles ago

I asked my dealer about the sensors, he said it was not surprising to see

Dunno what that meens, if you are not comfortable wit that take it in under warranty, have the check and verify your idle speed also

Thanks Zook & Jack. I wrote it down, then cleared it.

I will ride tomorrow at least 50 miles & I will re-check the trouble codes.

The only time I have gotten trouble codes was due to changing the front, then rear blinker bulbs.

I did not get 1 due to changing grips.

Thanks again. I could not find P0522 on anyone's code list. :xzqxz:

Just a quick update. I rode 50 miles today in our beautiful 64 degree sunny weather & did not have any codes upon returning.

Freewheeler, heal thyself;)

Update with additional information!

At the same time I had posted here about my (strange to me) error code, I asked my friends at Fix My Hog, who have helped me learn a lot about Harleys in a fairly short amount of time. Here is their response on the error code:

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your patience.

Suggest

taking the m/c back to the dealership for this one. This issue had been

a hot topic lately, weather your service department wants to admit it

or not. This code is a "low voltage

oil sensor". IT WILL APPEAR EVEN WITOUT TRIPPING THE RED WARING LIGHT.

The code may turn up when the oil is very thin and there is less

pressure. The question that HD has not yet answered for us: Is this a

fault in the sensor or its circuit OR is the oil pump

inadequate on those days when the oil temps are high?
Typically HD will

replace the oil pressure switch/sensor. Some of our customers have not

had any further issues. Others have the same reoccurring problem. Let us

know how you make out

I was also told that this problem showed up on the HD Forum, which I am not a member of.

The question regarding the oil pump bothers me.

I know my trike was not low on oil & the day I got the error code is was 65°. I am running the trike with the oil level at the max full line when checked hot to maintain maximum oil capacity.

Very intersting

I had a oil sender code flash 1 time

I checked oil pressure cold and hot with a master gauge

All was ok 4 now

This is 1 more reason I get extended warranty

If it blows I dont care

my 07 Streetbob blew up with NO warning

The MOCO sent a rep to look at my motor

They never saw a TC with a cracked cam plate and oil pump stil running

Long story, I got a NEW engine for 50.00 co pay

Well, I got the same code (ECM-P0552) again today for the 2nd time. So the 1st time in 11/2017 it was in the 60's & today it was low 80's.

I have ridden on 95 degree days a dozen times, so this does not seem to be related to the outside temp.

I cleared it & will watch for it again. If it happens once every 8 months I will let them check it before my warranty expires. I plan on buying an extended warranty from Boardtracker as soon as I sell my other motorcycle. I have until June 2019.

Some dealers and techs have said HD had a batch of bad oil pressure sensors

Guess that could explain some of this

I am also guessing with the digital tech H D has they can access codes we have cleared ( Historic Codes)

I am also guessing these OBD systems similar to most cars and trucks will save hard codes in the ECM even tho they have been soft deleted Some may take several key starts to rear their ugly heads JMO

Thanks Jack.

Intermittent problems are the worst, but once every 8 months is crazy.

What's really weird is that I was at my dealer for a military appreciation luncheon.

I will bring it up my next visit.

Be good to see what they have to say;)

I've got an update on this trouble code.

The service manager at my chosen dealership says that if you get a code every 8 months or so, it is most likely from your battery being just a little under charged & when you start the trike, the voltage goes to the numerous & various sensors, and if the voltage is not perfect, it can throw a low voltage code on startup.

If your ride has set for 3 or 4 days, not on the battery tender & you startup & ride 10 miles or so & stop, when you start up again, it can throw a low voltage code.

I would have 2 questions for him

1 How low does the voltage need to be ( the can bus electrical system operates on lower voltage is my understanding)

2 Why the oil sender and not say a throttle position or knock sensor? HMMMMM intruding minds want to know:p

I did ask your 2nd. question & he stated the oil pressure sensor seems to have had a batch that were "very sensitive" to voltage fluctuations. He said he has changed some that were getting that same code on a pretty regular basic. He but a service note in my file that I had got it twice, in case it gets worse.

That will cover me. He jokingly said it won't hard fail until my warranty expires.;)

Well, I just got it again, checked codes & had a ECM-P0522 (low voltage oil sensor).

Got this code on 11/23/17, 7/7/18, 9/30/18 & 5/16/19. the 1st 3 were on 60/70 degree days, this last 1 was at 90 degrees.

Oil level always good & I never get the red engine light. I have been blowing it off, as it seems to run fine, but I may ask Doc's HD to replace the sensor.

I replaced my switch, but alas the damn code came back

I have checked my pressure with a master gauge, it looks fine

Not much faith in this can bus system so far:p
