new with gw question

I am getting ready to buy an 03 GW trike with a Champion solid axle kit. Is there anything that I should be aware of? The bike has 19K miles with about 14K of that since it was kitted. Your advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Dray sorry no help on the Champion kit,but if you can I would get a good Honda service man to look at it.Sure not many miles in 7 years I would think it has done a lot of setting.A lot would depned on the price.Good luck it should make a good ride.You have found the rite trike place good folks and info.

Welcome to the board... I would also find out if this is one of the years for the frame cracks, and if so was it checked and fixed??? Other than that Lucky gave U some good advise..

Hi Dray. If you are like me you will be very happy with the Champion kit. I have a Harley, but there is every reason to think you will love your Goldwing, as they've got a great reputation among our members too.

I had some problems with my Champion. The guy that installed it did a really crappy job, but I bought it off ebay and the seller delivered it to my garage so I was pretty grateful. He gave me a 10 day warranty. Nothing went wrong in the 10 days, but here were some of the problems.<br /><br /><br /><br />

The right rear speaker did not work. Normally, not a big thing, but when I installed the CB, it did not work. I had to have a new amplifier installed. The breather vent on the differential is poorly done. Mine kept throwing oil. I finally got Champion (not an easy task) to replace the vent kit.<br /><br /><br /><br />

The rear trunk leaked. Probably because the lousy install job.<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />
$40 for a new gasket.<br /><br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br /><br />
I would ask if you could take the trike to another shop and pay them to check it out.<br /><br />

If not, get some kind of warranty.<br />

Hopefully you will get the install instructions and maintenance notes altheough the maint notes are available on the Champion site.

Unless you have a complete rundown on the maintenance done, I would have the oils changed, the fluids changed, The air filter (what a job that is to change, but have it changed) <br /><br /><br /><br />

I spent about $300 and had a complete service done and feel much better for it. In 10 months I have put about 13,000 miles on mine and ride every day.<br /><br /><br /><br />

I would check and see if that GW was part of the frame re-call. If so was it fixed.

Get the vin number. Call or go to a local Honda shop. Have them run the vin and it will tell you the status of all recalls. JUST DON"T TELL THEM IT"S A TRIKE!!!!!!!! Champion is a good kit! Part of the pitch about Champions is that you can sit on the fenders! I wouldn't advise it but I have seen several dealers do it!

Thanks People for all the info. I bought the trike from a local dealer who built it originally. The original owner was upgrading to a 2010 Champion GW. I am happy with the deal and I got all of the service records and recalls that were done.

The frame recall does not apply to this bike or trike. The recall is on a part that is no longer used on the trike.
