I am deeply saddened to report 2Paps, Ed Bruette ran off the road while leading a group ride in Maggie Valley Thursday afternoon and sustained multiple injuries, but he will recover. He went off a steep embankment and landed 50 feet down.

Our crew got to him immediately, he was pinned under his trike and was not moved until rescue units arrived and could evaluate, treat and immobilize him and get him up and into an ambulance. I am told that rescue got there very quickly, within 10 or 15 minutes. He was driven by ambulance to a pickup point and airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

David357 has been with Ed and his family almost constantly since the accident and reports that Ed is doing well, but has a long recovery ahead. He will be posting updates here shortly.

Your thoughts and prayers for Ed and his family are appreciated.

Update from 9/07/18

I arrived at the hospital, by car, about 20 minutes after his helicopter air-lift to Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. The hospital allowed me to stay with Ed in their high tech Trauma ER room while they evaluted Ed's condition. Ed was awake but sedated. He was aware who I was and could call me by name. Ed reached for my hand and would hold on.

At about 6:00 PM that evening and learning from the various trauma team doctor's that there were no life threatening issues, the Hospital Chaplin and I notified his wife about the incident. It is hospital protocol for Mission Hospital to notify family of an incident. The Hospital Chaplin was gracious enough to allow me to discuss details with his wife. Ed's wife and their daughter drove about 8 hours through the night and were able to see Ed for about 5 minutes prior to his 6:30 AM surgery this morning.

Ed returned from surgery at 1:20 PM. He was a little groggy but knew that his wife, daughter, Jan, John and me were there. The surgery went well.

Ed and his immediate family have expressed their sincere thanks and appreciation for the fast response efforts to everyone involved in securing Ed's rescue. They are also most grateful for the prayers sent. They also know that Trike Talk is Ed's extended family.

No one knows exactly what caused the incident, including Ed. So speculation at this point is not relevant to his complete and full recovery. Let's stay focused on that only.

Please give Ed and his immediate family all the space they need to process this incident.

I will report progress and update information when Ed's immediate family feels it is right. Ed and his family deserve that respect.

Update from 9/08/18 (about 9:30 pm)

I just walked in the door from a visit with Ed and his family.

Ed greeted me with a big smile today and stuck out his hand and gave me a strong hand shake. He kept smiling. I started to cry. Ed started to cry. Then the family, Ed and I all cried. Then we laughed. It was great! He looks remarkably good considering what just happened about 58 hours ago. I told Ed I see great improvement each of the three days I have been with him.

Ed is looking much better each day. His skin color is returning to a more normal look.

The bruising and swelling are subsiding quickly. He is more talkative, alert and involved in light conversation. His spirit is exceptional.ThumbUp

Ed is a fighter. He really can't wait to start PT (Physical Therapy) in a day or two for the his leg issues. Ed said he was going to really impress the physical therapist by exceeding all of their requirements. Go Ed.

He is determined to make a full recovery. If you know Ed, then you know he will accomplish his goal.ThumbUp

Here is the reality. Ed will be in a back brace for at least 8 months. He will be in a neck brace for at least 4 months. He will not be allowed to stand for 8 weeks. When Ed is released from Mission Hospital ( No release date set), Ed will be placed in a special long term recovery facility for at least 8 to 10 weeks. More tests were performed early this evening for other underlying injuries.

Ed's wife and daughter will be staying at his bedside but will be resting from time to time in free facilities located close to the hospital. Mission Hospital has provided this service for long term care trauma patients families. ThumbUp

Ed and his family have asked me,again, to express their most sincere thanks and appreciation to the Trike Talk Family for all of the loving caring support and prayers in Ed's time of need.

It sounds like Ed is an extremely lucky man to survive such an accident.

His positive attitude will go a long way in speeding his recovery.

Best wishes to Ed in his rehab and recovery.

Update 9/09/18

I just got home after visiting Ed and the family. Ed had another CT scan of the neck today. Doctors are in final stages of accessing all of the minor injuries.

It's so wonderful to walk into his room and watch Ed respond to a visit. He sticks out his hand and gives me a big hand shake from his bed and calls me out by name.

Ed looks great and he is able to sit up in a bed and eat solid foods now!! I see big differences on every visit and I told Ed so. The hospital staff love him and are charmed by his sense of humor.

If you know Ed, then you know his sense of humor.

Ed, the family and I were engaged in some rather lively short conversations.:D

Ed had his first PT (physical therapy) treatment for the two broken legs and actually looks forward to it. His spirits are great and his determination and attitude for a faster recovery are absolutely remarkable.
