DK Custom '19 Summer Adv. Riding to where Titanic Sank -Newfoundland Island & More

A few years ago we rode the most western road in Canada. (see that Ride Report HERE)

This year we're riding to the most Northeast piece of land in all of North America...which happens to be right at the edge of Iceberg Alley.

Pretty stoked about this trip. Never been to the eastern part of Canada, nor on a 17 HOUR ferry ride, nor across an 8 Mile Long bridge, nor etc., etc.

This is going to be a trip of a Lot of Firsts!

Here are a few maps of our rough plans-

Nova%20Scotia%20Map.JPG

17 Hour Ferry ride to Newfoundland Island

Ferry%20Map%20b.jpg

Circling Newfoundland Island and "only a 6 hour" ferry ride back to Nova Scotia.

Newfoundland%20Map.JPG

In the interest of Time, Finances, & ease of accommodations, the Tri-Glide is in our "home on wheels" until we reach where we really want to ride.

(see more on our new way of getting where we want to ride HERE)

TG%20In%20Trailer.jpg

Before getting to Nova Scotia we stop by and see DJ and George at Pro-Action Suspension-

One more stop before we set up camp, unload the TG, and start riding-

Hopewell Rocks...

This place is crazy, google it...

...half the day, where we're standing, is underwater.

Finally, we're in Truro. This is where the Ride Report start!

More to come!

Kevin

Day 1-

Left out of Hopewell Rock area. We stayed at this Apple Orchard...

12-orchard%20sign.jpg

...quiet and peaceful place that welcomes camping...

11-more%20fruit.jpg

...near the Bay of Fundy.

7-kevin%20looking%20for%20water.jpg

...heading toward Truro, which will be our base camp for the next couple of days.

Arriving at the Scotia Pines Campground early this afternoon...

17-scotia%20pine%20camp.jpg

...then left to explore...

20-sweeper%20ahead.jpg

...some of the country roads in the area.

21-bad%20roads.jpg

We have no plan...

28-bridge.jpg

...other than to explore the countryside...

29-crossing.jpg

...and be back at camp before dark.

23-road%20ahead.jpg

This was a great twisty road that turned to gravel...

24-rough%20part%20of%20road.jpg

More in next post.

Kevin

Day 1 Concluded-

The woods and miles of road...

SP%201.jpg

...are seemingly endless...

SP%202.jpg

...we will need to come back up here to do them justice.

SP%20a.jpg

Mary in the Mirror-

SP%20MiM.jpg

We have no real idea where we are in relation to camp, but it looks like rain is coming...

27-halifax%20sign.jpg

...so we punch in the address of camp to the GPS and choose the fastest route back...

31-moving%20on.jpg

...which gets us on Highway 102, straight thru a 15 minute rainstorm. lol

32-rain.jpg

Back at camp, the rain has passed.

33-back%20at%20camp.jpg

Getting everything ready for an early start tomorrow...

35-camp%20kevins%20phone.jpg

...ride to ferry, then around PEI, then back the long way via Confederation Bridge.

Are you going to Oak Island? If so, tell Marty and Rick Lagina hello (The Curse of Oak Island - History Channel)!

I don't see it on your maps and I can't seem to google a map of the layout of the entire area - so am asking this question blind..don't know if it is even in your travel area.

Looks like a great start of another neat adventure!

You have a beautiful trip a head of you. I would love to go back to Nova Scotia. :)

I would like to suggest when you are in Nova Scotia take a day and ride the Cabot Trail. Ride safe!

God bless

Nice pics as usual Kevin.ThumbUp

Is fuel expensive in Canada?

Thank you!

Yes, it is more expensive than in Mississippi...but I don't know that it is a lot more than some parts of the USA, like Cali or some places in the Northeast.

It is purchased by the litre in Canadian dollars, so it is not an easy computation at the pump. But it works out to around USD 4.15 a gallon for premium. In Mississippi we pay between $2.75-$3.00 a gallon for premium (93 octane)

Looks like an awesome trip! Looking forward to following you and Mary along the way! Enjoy and be safe!

Thank you!

Nope, Oak Island is southwest of Halifax in Nova Scotia. We are staying more north east of Halifax in our travels. Maybe next time! :)

Say Hi for me too!

 Maybe next time!

Thank you. Yep, pretty stoked. Cabot Trail is coming up!

Great start Kevin & Mary, except for the short rain the weather looked great.

Thank you!

Yes, we could have gone earlier in the year and increased our odds of seeing icebergs, but we wanted to be in a bit warmer weather, but NOT hot weather. :)

Kevin

Day 2-

It rained pretty hard last night (ceramic coating is beading up nicely :) )...

1-moring%20rain%20on%20trike.jpg

...but sunny now, and we are up early...

2-leaving%20camp.jpg

...leaving out thru some puddles...

...once on the road, all is dry.

4-pretty%20morning.jpg

We have about an hour ride to the ferry terminal...

5-road%20ahead.jpg

...and we need to be there by 8:30 am.

9-getting%20closer.jpg

Having never traveled this road before...

11-pictou%20sign.jpg

...we give ourselves an extra 30 minute cushion...

12-pei%20sign.jpg

...we arrived an hour after leaving...

16-almost%20there.jpg

...did not need the 30 minute cushion, but better safe than sorry.

14-mary%20getting%20ready.jpg

More in next post.

Kevin

Day 2 continued-

We have a 75 minute ferry ride...

17-waiting%20to%20load.jpg

...here we go...

18-loading%20up.jpg

...this ship is huge!

19-here%20we%20go.jpg

We're parked up front, and surrounded by semi's!

20-tight%20fit.jpg

This is how we're getting over to Prince Edward Island-

22-kevin%20putting%20things%20away.jpg

Leaving the TG and heading upstairs for the ride over.

24-looking%20back%20at%20ferry.jpg

Mary likes ferry rides, this is the first of 3 we have planned on this trip.

Down there is where we were parked a few minutes ago.

Bald eagle hanging out at the dock-

25-eagle.jpg

Walking around the top deck...

27-lifeboat.jpg

...while still at dock.

28-lifeboats.jpg

More in next post.

Kevin

Day 2 Continued-

We're underway...

31-water.jpg

...pretty soon it is just water and ships...

32-boat.jpg

...no land to be seen. It is about 27 kilometers, shore to shore.

33-pretty.jpg

Before you know it we are seeing a Lighthouse on PEI.

34-there%20it%20is.jpg

Time to unload...

35-time%20to%20get%20off.jpg

...here we go!

36-riding%20off.jpg

We're on Prince Edward Island...

38-here%20we%20go.jpg

Mary wants to go see a Lighthouse. So we head toward the southeast corner of the Island.

39-water.jpg

But first we need some gas!

40-store.jpg

Ok, now we have a full tank...off to our first Lighthouse. Cape Bear!

44-here%20we%20are.jpg

More on Day 2 as time allows.

Kevin

Day 2 Continued-

Mary likes Lighthouses...

45-lighthouse.jpg

...Cape Bear is the first of many today.

47a-cape%20sign.PNG

View from deck...

47b-on%20the%20porch.PNG

...took a walk around the grounds...

46a-here%20comes%20mary.PNG

I guess I'm contemplating my belly button while Mary looks around. lol

48-resting.jpg

A view out to a lotta ocean!

49-more%20pretty.jpg

Ok, off to the next Lighthouse!

51-leaving%20out.jpg

This one is on Panmure Island...

52-panmure%20sign.jpg

...instead of a bridge to the Island we cross a causeway that has a beach along one side of it.

53-crossing.jpg

Here we are!

56-here%20we%20are.jpg

More in next post.

Kevin

Day 2 Continued-

Walked around a bit...

57-walking%20around.jpg

...fantastic views...

58-pretty.jpg

Headed back across the strand. Even though it is barely 70*, the road is packed with beach-goers. For folks that live 8-9 months a year in sub-freezing temps, this is really warm weather for them!

60-leaving%20out.jpg

We went and saw 3 or 4 more Lighthouses...

61-north%2017.jpg

...before Mary had her fill...

63-another%20rider.jpg

...I'm just enjoying the riding. Every now and then we pass thru a town...

64-passing%20through%20city.jpg

...or a harbor...

66-river.jpg

...but mostly it is farmland. They grow a lot of potato's here...something like 12% of the workforce on the Island work in the potato industry!

And there's still a lot of woodland too...

67b-bad%20roads.PNG

After wandering around the eastern/northeastern part of PEI we decide to cut southwest, toward Charlottetown...

68a-police.PNG

...it was a long, mostly straight shot...

67-moving%20on.jpg

More in next post.

Kevin

Day 2 Continued-

We hit Charlottetown hungry!

This looked like a good place!

71-ate%20here.jpg

And it was. We had a great meal, and some doggie bags for later.

Doggie%20bags.jpg

Shadow pic...

72-shadow%20pic.jpg

...as we leave Charlottetown, toward Confederation Bridge...

76-farmland.jpg

...it's about an hour ride to the bridge, some farmland, and a lot of small towns.

77-getting%20close%20to%20bridge.jpg

Arriving at the entrance...

80-toll%20bridge.jpg

...it's good to see...

81c-fine.PNG

...a few places are still serious about drivers paying attention to their driving!

81-here%20we%20go.jpg

This bridge is amazing...

83-so%20much%20water.jpg

...at 8 miles long, I believe it is the longest bridge we've ever ridden!

86-leaning%20out%20diff%20perspec.jpg

Will post more of Day 2 as time allows.
