Goldwing Trike Security

I'm doing a CSC kit to my 2009 Goldwing GL1800. I'm interested what everyone does for security. I love traveling on the bike and have to park a lot overnight in the Hotel parking lots. Do you use Alarms? Disable the ignition?

Ron.......Welcome To Trike-Talk....:wave4:..

Although a regular GL1800 is heavy, a couple guys could be able to lift it into a van if they really tried. Now a GL1800 with trike conversion would be extremely difficult to do. I have never worried about it being stolen like that.

Normally the only "security" involved when I'm traveling is to put a half cover over it to keep someone from getting the idea to sit on it. And then I will usually lock the steering as well as push the reverse switch in before shutting the trike off for the night. My trike has always been there in the morning. Even if I decide not to lock the steering, with the reverse, it cannot be rolled away. They would need to be able to hotwire it in order to turn the reverse mode off and I have yet to see or hear about any GL1800 being stolen that way.

Another tip is that quite a few motels/hotels I have stayed at have a canopy out front of the office. Some have been gracious enough to let me park off to the side of the driveway under the canopy. This way, the office staff can keep an eye on it as well as many now have security cameras on that particular spot.

The reality is that Goldwings are rarely targets of theft. A Harley is more likely to disappear during the night and could lead to the tragic results that happened in Sikeston, MO a couple years back. I'm more worried about protecting myself then my trike vanishing.

:Agree:

I wonder if anyone has ever had, or heard of theft problems with Goldwings. I know I haven't. I suppose insurance companies would have statistics. I'd bet it is pretty much a non-event..... Jim

We have never had anti-theft apparatus on any of our bikes or trikes. Just removed any valuables, the key, and put a cover on….didn’t even lock the forks. Never have seen any evidence that they were tampered with.

I have a suggestion: On a Goldwing where the engine will not start when the side stand is down..... Why not place a switch on the bike where you can switch it on or off make it "think" that the stand is down until you flick that switch.... No one can ever start the bike unless they know about the switch.....

Thats actually a great idea and I completely forgot about that. Mine had the harness cut when the kickstand was removed and I had been thinking about doing something with that anyway. Didn't consider this reason but was wanting to do it in case the F1 (GL1800 check engine) light ever came on. The easy way to pull a code on a bike is to leave engine running when light comes on and put kickstand down. But with the kickstand gone after trike conversion, and the harness cut, this is no longer possible. Putting a switch to it would give that ability back and double as a cheap anti theft solution...

I always used a 1/2 cover. In 9 years and 36 states nobody ever bothered her. My motto is out of site out of mind. If they dont see it they wont touch or play with it. Plus I would twirl the bottoms where they attached to the footpegs so I would know if someone lifted the cover.

I would be a little leery of leaving it in reverse, if for some reason it decides to stick in reverse, you aren't going anywhere. I have read of this. BTW, Welcome to the forum neighbor.

I have heard of this happening as well. But I think (could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time...) the issue might be more likely to occur when parked on a grade and tension is put on the reverse system so it gets "loaded". I think if it's parked on semi level ground, it should have a much less chance of happening??? It may also help to pull hand brake after stopping and attach something like a velcro strap or thick elastic band to keep brake activated and lessen the chance of loading the reverse system. Just using reverse has worked well for me so far and no issues, knock on wood. I know that I could just park it in gear to keep from rolling but that would be easily defeated by pulling in clutch or popping gear selector into neutral and these can be done without the motor running. I declined to add the parking brake when I had my conversion done but think if you had this, it could also keep tension off the reverse system when stopping for the night too.

TRIKE SECURITY

Mar. 23, 2022

I have a 2004 Honda GL1800 with the MotorTrike Prowler RT reverse trike kit. I really enjoy the bike, but I am curious as to what to use for security when leaving the bike outside while shopping. I can't turn the handlebars all the way to the left due to the two front wheels. It will only turn about 30 degrees in either direction. I presume I could use locks on the rotors. Any else have this problem on reverse trikes ?

Well after the talk about adding a switch, I decided to go ahead and do it. Honestly I wanted to do it more for if the FI light showed up so I could check and get the error codes but could be a little cheap insurance as well. I took the sidestand harness off, removed the protective covering, clipped off the splice the trike installer put in, crimped on some connectors, hooked them up to the switch and wrapped it up tightly with electrical tape. I put the green wire on center spade of switch, green with black stipe on one of the outside spade and the yellow with black stripe on the other outside spade. Flip the switch one way and the orange "S" light shows up on the dash. Now bike will kill if someone tries to put it in gear. I flip it the other way and the light goes off and bike will start and run normally. It tucks in nicely behind the chrome engine cover.

I picked up the switch here:

I did something like that on my 68 dodge charger I cut the wire to the coil ran a wire though the firewall underneath the dash to a toggle switch then back to the coil it actually saved the car from being stolen I had parked on a street in Brooklyn and the would be thief screwed out the ignition switch but couldn’t start the engine by hot wiring and left the ignition switch just laying on the floor 👍

Tie 20 pound mono filament to it down low, run it under the floor mat in front of the room, tie it to a pot or other loud thing in the room, not your wife's toe.
