Seen a posting on a Facebook trike site about a new policy going into effect in the state of New York, where it will now be illegal to remove or modify any factory installed MC exhaust. Fine of $1000 and or 30 days in jail, any of you from NY can you verify this.

Yes its called the SPEEP Act…. I don’t know how it affects out of New York State motorcycles but if you live in New York State you have to go to inspection if your pipes are louder than the stock you fail inspection….

31-a. No person shall, in the state, sell, OFFER FOR SALE OR install

[or use] a motorcycle exhaust device without internal baffles, known as

"straight pipes".

31-b. No person shall, in the state, sell, OFFER FOR SALE OR install

[or use] a motorcycle exhaust device that is intentionally designed to

allow for the internal baffling to be fully or partially removed or

interchangeable OR THAT HAS BEEN MODIFIED IN A MANNER THAT WILL AMPLIFY

OR INCREASE THE NOISE EMITTED BY THE MOTOR OF A MOTORCYCLE ABOVE THAT

EMITTED BY THE EXHAUST SYSTEM ORIGINALLY INSTALLED ON SUCH MOTORCYCLE.

This subdivision shall not apply to a motorcycle manufactured or assem-

bled prior to nineteen hundred seventy-nine or a motorcycle registered

as a limited use vehicle or an all terrain vehicle pursuant to article

forty-eight-A or forty-eight-B of this chapter.

There is a db noise law . NY inspection on noise is not required to get a sticker . It’s all common sense on noise . Loud pipes don’t save lives , it only aggravates lives .

Loud pipes lose Rights!!!..

Many years ago my neighbor who was on the job gos out and having a midlife crisis buys a Harley….And puts on loud pipes… And he leaves every morning for his shift at 5 AM and he has the bike sitting out on the driveway for 15 minutes or so warming up before he leaves and then drives by my house rattling windows…..So I had a friendly conversation asking him to put the stock pipes back on Or have a talk with his chief’ laws are meant for everyone….Within a day or two the stock pipes went back on…

I have a Thunderheader on my Road King, when I leave for work at 5:30 am I start it and put in gear and just idle up the street trying my best not to wake anyone. No complaints so far, it's more about common sense which many people seem to lack.

And then there’s The knuckleheads who crave attention and put loud pipes on and say look at me I’m a Root’en Toot’en motorcycle man and I don’t care if I annoy everybody behind me..😉..

I have not seen or heard about this - but the question might be - what happens with trike conversions (CSC) etc - all of those are modified

My guess would be that has to comply with the vin number equipment, so if it started as a factory two wheeler you would have to have the stock mufflers on it.

I just put EPA compliant and certified Vance and Hines slip-ons on my 2020 tri-glide. If I lived in New York, I'd be illegal? State law doesn't trump federal law, but in this day and age, nothing is acceptable in this all inclusive world. I am so sick and tired of being legislated out of my freedoms. I agree some people are asshats while most are considerate, but the asshats stand out.

My CSC Trike does not have the OEM Honda mufflers. The CSC mufflers are just a little bit louder and (IMHO) better sounding. My trike now sounds more like a motorcycle instead of a sewing machine..... :) ..... Jim

Don't think so - my mufflers are being returned, along with a number of other parts

That is what they did on my trike. They wanted my stock mufflers to modify and returned my Vance & Hine slip--ons for me to resell. The stock mufflers were cut down to fit with their guts put in them. And their mod made my stock mufflers almost as loud as the V&H's were.
