Hi new guy to this interesting forum, l have a problem with my rear brakes locking up after riding for an hour or so, the pedal sticks down n the brakelights on the bike also struggles to move. After l park it the brakes loosen up n pedal goes back to normal. Can anyone help me out with this. Thanks

Hi Charlie, Welcome to Trike Talk and your first post

You could have a compound problem with your brakes

The first thing is the rear master cylinder could be losing its free travel and not releasing the brakes

Second, your rear calipers ( I assume you have rear disc brakes) could be sticking and not releasing

Or if you have a residual check valve on the rear brakes it could be holding pressure on too long

I would start by bleeding the rear brakes first before replacing any parts, use the correct fluid

Brake lock up

I rebuilt the master it was leaking, and l have drum breaks in rear of the trike. So l see from your reply that bleeding the breaks could be part of the issue. I will bleed them after adjusting the brakes. Will let you know thanks for advise

After you bleed and test ride, if the brakes hang up, crack the wheel cylinder bleeders, if the wheels free up your master is the cause

Sometimes rebuilding kits just do not work like they should

Breaks locking

Hi guys thanks for welcoming me with fantastic info and warmth. I bled the breaks on the trike and low n behold problem solved. I bled them before but apparently not well enough there was plenty of air. Also pedal back to normal. Thanks very much for the insight to do the repairs folks.

Good deal Charlie, enjoy your rides now that you have the braking under control;)

Lehman renegade trike rear breaks locking up

The original problem l had withe the breaks locking up is back. lm going to say it never fully went away. I have one question about the rear lines l see they go into a junction valve in rear. I don't know if this is a proportioning valve or a junction block? If it's a proportioning valve it could very well be my prob. I am going to replace both rear break cylinders as well. Maybe when they get hot they lock, because when the bike sits a while after lock up they free themselves? Any suggestions appreciated thanks

The valve is probably a residual check valve, if it is bad it could be holding the rear brakes on

Crack the rear bleeders loose, if a good stream of pressure pushes fluid out the valve and the wheel cylinders may be bad

It can also be the rear master cylinder has lost its free play, that can also lock the rear brakes on

You said you rebuilt the master cylinder. This problem has reared its ugly head again, if this was my trike I would replace the master cylinder

Rebuilding masters is a lost art, if not done with a good rebuild kit and proper honing and cleaning you are asking for more bad JUJU

Appreciate your response. I do value your insight

Can l upload a pic of valve somehow?

When you click on reply to thread you will see the option bar

Click on the paper clip to attach files from your computer

One thing I will suggest to you about the check valve you have, make a jumper line to take out the check valve, ride the trike, if the brakes are still locking you know the valve is OK and the master is bad

Lehman renagade rear breaks

I replaced both rear break cylinders and bled system. I will let everyone know how the progress is going after l get my oil pump gear shaft snap ring in the mail n bike buttened up from spring maintenance. Here's the part number for the rear cylinders for anyone that needs to pick em up. WCA101604 mustang 91/93
