I've read a number of things on Towing and what it cost the owner to get it towed to the nearest shop. I was curious as to just what my insurance covered. I know what my policy says but I wasn't sure I was understanding it so I called Progressive insurance. All they pay is $100. I was kind of surprised. If you are far from home and have to tow it 60, 80 or 100 miles to a dealer it can be pretty damn expensive. I went to Americade one year and a buddy of mine needed a tow from Lake George to Fort Ann Harley-Davidson. Anybody who knows the area knows how far that is. It cost him over $80 for the tow and this was quite a few years ago. It cost him more for the tow than it did for the repair. What I want to know is are all insurance companies this sparse on Towing? Or are there better companies out there?.

I added motorcycle coverage to my AAA membership and had to use it once a few years back. All the other coverages, HOG, you insurance company, AMA, etc., will only tow you to the nearest dealer and most of them have a mileage limit. AAA will tow you up to 100 miles wherever you want to go. That worked well for me because I knew my problem (damaged and leaking oil cooler) and while there were three dealers nearby the only one who had the part was the farthest away, about 90 miles. With the other coverages I would have been stuck waiting to get the part.

I have towing on my Progressive motorcycle policy but it has nothing to do with hauling it to a dealer for repair, it only applies to towing it due to an accident.

I have the AAA towing for motorcycles and Geico has towing too !. The only time I had to be towed was when I had my spider about 15 miles from home and And it just so happened that my son was off from work that day and he just came down with the trailer And load it up and towed it home and that was an interesting story the main shaft on the spider striped and had no power whatsoever I manage to coast of to the side of the road little bit of a downward hill and we were fighting to get up the ramp then all of a sudden The spider felt like It had wings it just flew up onto the trailer unbeknownst to us while we were struggling to get it on some guy pulled over walks over and without saying a word helps push it up and still not saying a word just like that leaves it was almost like the Lone Ranger …I looked at my son and said who was that mask man???

I have Towing on my Progressive Insurance also, my complaint was it only pays $100. I talked about a dealer because that is where I would take it to get repaired if I was far from home. If it has to be towed more than a few miles it will cost a hell of a lot more than $100. That was my point. I'm thinking my best bet would be AAA.

IMO it is not only how far or how much but also how responsive and professional the service is. I know many have had good experienced with H.O.G. road assistance but not me unfortunately. H.O.G. and the insurance companies outsource their roadside assistance - H.O.G. to Road America, now a part of Agero.

I was not in a major city but in a medium size town and needed a tow when I called them for assistance. Took hours for anyone to respond and then they were not equipped to tow my Ultra Classic - they said they were told it was a mid-size Honda! Another tow driver would not come unless I paid him saying it took him months to get payment from a previous tow. Personally I just feel much more secure knowing that AAA, the largest auto club, is there should I need assistance.

I just signed up with AAA and got their Premier plan. It covers towing motorcycles, RV’s and cars up to 200 miles. I’ve been with Allstate for many years and their service has been good when needed but there has been price creep over the years. We just switched to T-Mobile for cell service and this gives me a $60 discount with AAA. So the Premier plan cost me $60. It was a no brainer.

Have it towed to U-Haul

Friend broke down this summer while on a long haul. No dealers within 250 miles. Towing to a dealership would have been $$$$. He saved $$ by calling U-Haul. They set him up, helped load his bike and he drove it to the Dealership and dropped off the U-haul for much cheaper.

My Superglide broke down so instead of letting a dealer mess with it and sitting in a motel I called a Penske dealer near Sacramento that was a customer of mine. The manager sent out a mechanic with a pickup truck and trailer. Now a scheme began to cook in my little brain. I rented a straight truck with air brakes and air ride. Since I broker my own loads, checked the load board. 4 pallets of a special brew, snake piss or some such, that was all the rage with spring breakers needed to go to Wilmington, N.C. Stopped at the Budweiser plant in Ft. Collins,CO. and picked up the load. They have thire own scales there and it was light anyway. Bought a paper log book at a truck stop and had a fresh 70 hours to run with. That load paid for the trip, fuel, truck rental, motels and parts for my bike.

After reading this thread I asked the wife to check if our AAA policy covered my trike. Despite her insistence that it did she called them and they said no. That AAA doesn't cover motorcycles in NJ.

She called the number on our AAA card and was told in SOUTH Jersey they don't offer coverage for motorcycles or RV's, Plus or otherwise. I feel discriminated against. Perhaps a civil rights issue is at play here. Might have to call Jesse Jackson.

I guess in South Jersey the tow trucks still use a hook they don’t have flatbeds down there….?

But While you’re at it start a lawsuit because they don’t ship Taylor ham to South Jersey ..

Agree 100%. I had towing through HOG Road America up until last year. I started researching motorcycle towing and read horror stories with Road America ... hours long waits, no shows, etc. etc. So I didn't renew with them. Instead, I upgraded my membership to AAA Plus/RV.

Yup. It’s a crap shoot with Road America it seems.
