Tri glide DK customs axle bearing retainer plates covered by HD extended serv. plan?

Hello fellow trikers

So I need to replace the axle bearing retainer plates on my 2019 Tri Glide, will my extended service plan cover the expense of replacing the axle bearing retainer plates if I get the DK customs axle bearing retainer plates ?? Thank you all in advance for your input.

I would ask the dealer. I doubt it. Good luck. They will want to put the same cheap crap on. I did the DK plates on my 2020 & at less than a year old the HD parts were already wearing. The DK plates are a lot thicker than HD

I'm not sure of the cost of both, but assuming the DK version are a bit more, you could likely get it done if you are willing to pay the difference in the cost. Asking the dealer is the only way you will know for sure....

Keep in mind, however, that I doubt that DK Customs has any sort of business relationship with your local dealer, and is highly unlikely to discount their parts to that dealer. The dealer is entitled to a markup on that part, so will not get it at the price you could buy it for direct. If you buy it and take it in, the dealer has every right to either refuse to install it, or charge more for the install, which again, you would be responsible for the difference.

YMMV

Ask your service department first

Most dealerships do not install non approved Harley parts, I doubt any warranty or ESP will cover this even tho it is for sure the way the factory should have designed the plates that @ D K Customs has designed

I think this would likely be better stated as "many" rather than "most". I know a lot of dealerships will install aftermarket parts (I know all of them around here will), as long as they do the ordering of the parts to insure that they get a good quality part, the correct part, and a markup on that part.

I agree for the most part except for hard parts like other vendors cams, internal engine and drive line parts

Harley has in the past taken a hard stance on parts that are not tested by their design teams and could not be warranted or installed by dealers

Maybe this has changed, I would still have the conversation with your local service department to be sure and get it in writing. I do not like surprises when I am travelling and have a breakdown

Yeah, I forgot that OP said he was on extended warranty. I might come down to whether it is a Harley warranty or from some other warranty company......

Since an "extended warranty" ( ripoff) is nothing more than an insurance policy it would be up to the carrier to approve of the upgrade. The dealer would also have to agree to do the work and wont unless hes sure to get reimbursed for it. But I give my full approval to move ahead with this..for what its worth ($0.00).

Almost assuredly, under the HD extended warranty, they will want to replace the bearing retainer plates (if they are bowed) with the OEM plates.

If you want to save money, and have a better warranty (that will cover replacement with the stouter DK plates) get a refund on that overpriced, underwhelming HD extended warranty. Then get a real extended warranty from Jim Palmer.

Here's a video of how a real extended warranty replaced a non-HD part on my own TG last year.

I got the Eagle Guardian from Jim back in January on my 21 Tri Glide. Factory warranty ended in January. Took the trike to the dealer for a coolant leak couple of weeks ago thinking I would be covered by extended warranty. My dealer found out that the hose down at the pump was leaking and called Eagle Guardian to see if covered.

They said hoses are not covered by the warranty and would not pay. The hose was only about 10 bucks but labor was $125.00, so I was out about $140.00. I would have replaced the hose myself, if I had known hoses are not covered. I guess from now on I will call to make sure issue is covered before taking it to dealer. Just wanted to pass this along to everyone.

I received my extended warranty from Jim in late August. The one he selling as that time was the HD extended warranty. It was the best on the market at that time. The others had started eliminating several things, which made them not good for purchasing.

Some insurance company/extended warranty CEO/CFO is sitting in his 5 million dollar home in Jackson Hole Wyoming laughing his ass off right now reading these posts. How far ahead would we be by setting up a breakdown fund putting money into it every month? My breakdown fund now has $14,853.00 in it over the last 20 years. Think that would cover any repair?

Why ask here?

The decision is up to the provider of the extended service plan (it is not an extended warranty), not us...

If this situation is that wide spread seems to me a recall would be in order. Maybe file complaints with the National Highway Safety Administration?

Upgraded Component Coverage

USWC's Eagle Guardian Plan provides coverage for virtually all factory approved and factory or dealer installed electrical, electronic, hydraulic and/or mechanical parts essential to the operation of your motorcycle. There are a few exclusions, that are listed on page 12 of the Contract Booklet (LINK HERE). (final drive belts, clutch plates, non-hydraulic hoses, ect)

The Eagle Guardian Plan doesn't require the component to be covered by the original factory warranty. This gives the rider flexibility to upgrade their motorcycle accordingly. There are Pros/Cons with every plan available; however, the Eagle Guardian and Eagle Plus plan are excellent options.

Hi Pat,

I think if you check with Jim, you will see that you did not get the HD Extended Warranty from him...it has been many years since he has made those available.

Man, I hate that for you. As Jim noted, there are things that are not covered...usually "wear" items, like hoses, tires, belts, etc.

Side note, really surprising that a hose on a 21 failed, I would think it was more likely the clamp was not on the hose good...have seen a few like that.

For next time, here is a video on the water pump, hoses, connections, etc. that you may find interesting.

Yeah, that is the age old conundrum. Many folks would be money ahead if they used the $ they would have paid for an extended warranty into a Breakdown Fund. Myself, I have always had an extended warranty on Twin Cams and M8's, and I am money ahead doing that...but that is obviously not the case for everyone, or the companies would be out of business.

Here's a video of the Pros and Cons of Extended Warranties-

I think you are right, I bet that the clamp caused the problem. They changed the hose and clamps both. I should have known that hoses would not be covered, since they are wear items. Jim was great to work with and I'm glad I got the coverage.
