helmet cam

I went searching for some stats on the Vivitar camera, couldn't find any of 8 or 9 web pages. Doesn't say anything about battery capacity, or memory, very important! But for 40 bucks you can't expect much.

I've used 4 or 5 different cameras on my bikes. Currently using a GoPro Hero 1080p Hi Def. I've run power to it, so I don't have to worry about battery life, and have a 32 gig SD card in it. I can record for just about 4 hours before maxing the SD card. On batteries it is good for about 2 hours. Do you need Hi Def? YES!

The Vivitar says about 1.3 megapixil. If you try to blow up that great still you took, or freeze frame a video it will get very grainy much larger than 3X5 Hi Def is about 8 megapixil!

Here is about 4 minutes of a 2 hour ride through Simi Valley. Shot with the GoPRo and edited using Sony Vegas Editing software:

I know the GoPro is kind of pricey, but we have some great slide shows and videos we've taken of our trips. They really look great on our 16X9 format Hi Def television, kinda like going there again! Remember, the stuff on Youtube is condensed way down for downloading!

Good Luck and happy hunting!

And, here is a picture of my bike with the camera mounted just above the faring.

If you mount the Go Pro low on the windshield with the sticky mount you will not get the "gelling" effect because it is more secure and will not vibrate.

One of the characteristics of a Harley, they shake and quake at idle! One of our riding buddies has a 'wing that idles smooth as glass, a lot better pictures! Can't tell, is that a Wing, or Victory?

anyone here have one ?

I'm shopping prices, and see a wide range... the least expensive :

does one really need HD ?

I recently got a GOPRO Hero HD and will be using it to shoot video of your new Suzuki GS450A trike before we send it back to you!! :pepper:

Really, it all depends upon what you want to do with it. In the cameraphone/YouTube era, our video expectations have actually gone down, but for me HD is the only way to go. Got mine on eBay for about $100 with a full set of attachments.

I don't think you really want to go with a camera that is only helmet mounted. The videos are irritating in the sense that they are always moving around with your head motion and that is very difficult to watch.

A hard mounted camera is a better way to go.

I do TONS of video and IMHO ... the HD GoPro is the ONLY wat to go !
Here is one of my vid's showing different camera's and mounts.

Here is my YouTube channel and any video posted after last May 2010
is done with a GoPro. The GoPro has 5 different video modes and will also
do 5 megapixel pictures either one at a time OR even a time lapse.

My advice, 1) helmet cam is better than trike mounted. 2) watch a ton of video's and decide which ones were the best and email the publisher about what he uses. A friend of ours in my HOG chapter has a go-pro on his Ultra he also (for one time only) tried fashioning a cheaper camera, 2 miles into the ride of 8 bikes the cheap camera fell off (he was road captain) and the damned thing bounced and was hit by almost all of us, I was sweep and my back tire hit it and it shot into the desert, we really tried to find it as you can imagine the cool video it captures, oh well. Good luck in your search.

I bought a Cobra cam. ( Sportsmansguide on line) $79.00. Pros:comes with waterproof case ( depth of 8 ') helmet mount, bike mount and the 2 meg chip.real bargain. Cons: takes 2 hours to charge using the USB port on the computer or wall adapter. Takes terrible stills.the video is good in HD but batteries only good for 1hr. You can put it in car mode ( takes video in 5 min segments) or use it in reg. very small.
