2 temperature readings I am interested in on a 2020 wet M8Engine: Engine Temperature (ET) and Cylinder Head Temperature. (CHT) You would think CHT would be much higher than ET at any one time. Especially at higher speeds (70-90 mph)

I am getting massive conflicting information of normal ET and normal CHT. Can anyone set me straight with the facts and not hearsay?

ET or CHT Read this: About m8 engines Dealers will tell you normal operating temperatures are 270-325 Degrees.

Correct my information that is incorrect!

ET or CHT?

M8 ideal temperature is 260 degrees

ET or CHT?

At 280 degrees the engine on twin cool engine, is starting to gets hot. 290 degrees the engine is too hot and starts to accelerate engine wear.

Aluminum Alloy castings rapidly start losing strength at 350 degrees. Cylinders will go out of round, the heads will warp, valve seats will begin to warp.

ET or CHT?

Optimum temperature for a cylinder wall is 190-195 degrees. So if your M8 engine is operating at normal temperature 260-275 degrees) you know the cylinder walls will be at around 190-195 Degrees)

The engine temp that can be
displayed on the Power Vision screen is read directly from whichever temperature sensor the ECM looks at. It is NOT an exhaust temp. Depending on where you’re located, those temps are not all that uncommon for a big twin in the summer. Out here in the deserts of Las Vegas, when our ambient temperature is 110+, it is not uncommon for me to see temps as high as 350 or so in stop and go traffic. I checked with one of our HD experts, who told me to only be concerned if the temp gets to 380… At which time, they recommended to pull over, shut the bike off and let it cool down.

My experience:

2019 Tri-Glide. Heavily modded w Power Vision mounted on the bars.

I have Kevin's oil cooler. I have done some of the smaller mods like Kevin's wings....

I have Mighty-Mites....

I have not found a difference in the readings for ET and CHT.

I have the Power Vision set to show me ET and Coolant Temp.

Both ET and Coolant Temp vary considerably with ambient air temperature.

In 90 degree ambient, buzzing down the Interstate at 75mph, I'll run 290 ET and 190 coolant temp.

Lower ambient and lower readings. They seem to keep pace such that at 60 degree ambient I read 260 ET and 160 coolant temp.

I've done several recent "HOG" rides where we've stopped at the top of 10,000ft plus mountain passes for pictures. Pretty easy to heat these motors up doing climbs like that.... My cooling fans were consistently the first to shut off, even compared to two wheel'd motorcycles (M8 wet heads....). So those stock guys are running hotter than I am, they just can't see their numbers.....

Speaking from an air/oil cooled M8, the 17 I traded ran 300 degrees according to my PV screen. I never had any problems with it, tho I did infrared my heads and cylinders and my reading was lower than the PV reading.

I took several oil temp readings(This is a number IMO that we need to know) and I found the M8 to be running just a bit north of 225

I have not checked my 21 M8 114 yet, but seat of the pants tells me it is running to damn hot for its own good

I have a bit over 1000 miles on it now and I am running a straight 50 weight oil in the Florida heat
