Coolant smell

Hey guys, I've been having a strong coolant smell last few days. I park her in the garage and have yet to see any leaks there or at work. Plus my reservoir jug was about an inch low(I topped it off a week ago). Anybody have any suggestions on where to look as far as where it might be pooling or common areas to look at?

Thanks for any help in advance!

might help if we knew what the bike was. 1500 or 1800.

anyway. if it is the 1500 most likely the top radiator hose that connects to the thermostat housing is loose and your coolant is staying on top of the engine and cooking off.

if i remember correctly your going to have to remove the right side of the fairing to get a site line to that hose.

the clamp should be facing that direction to so you'll need a long screw driver to get in there to tighten it.

or you could use a socket with a couple of long extensions.

if someone is more familier with getting a site line back to that hose maybe they'll chime in.

i would not ride it to much without tightening that clamp. if it gets loose enough it will pop off and you'll have coolant everywhere.

Bob's profile says he has an'87 Goldwing Trike. That would make it a GL1200.. Maybe someone has some experience/knowledge on the matter.

Sorry I do not Bob. Hope you get some help. Sure sounds like you have a seeping coolant line somewhere... :xszpv::xszpv:

I had a 1500 and I replaced all the hoses on it and it stopped the problem. It was quite a chore to replace all the hose but if you have the time you should be able to do it yourself.

I think the 1200 is set up the same way. with the top radiator hose going to the top front of the engine onto the thermostat. if nothing is leaking onto the floor.

Thanks for the ideas/info guys. I'm gonna look at it tonight to see if I can find a leak under pressure. I'll tighten all the clamps to, just to be safe. 👍

Just to update:

Found the hose going to the overflow jug was badly cracked where it connects to it. Replaced hose and used new clamps. No more smell!

Thanks again for your help.

Bob
