From Harleytown, but my name’s not Davidson

New to trikes, picked up a 2019 Tri-Glide on Tuesday having traded in my 2012 FLHR (Road King for you Honda folks).

Grew up in the Milwaukee area, high school and college here, and came home after a career driving destroyers for Uncle Sam. The Navy got tired of me and sent me to the Marines for two years as a Naval Gunfire Officer. After suitable penance, and after learning a heckuva lot from the guys in green, I went back to the fleet for four more sea tours, ending up in D.C. for my first shore duty other than schools. I was a long way from family, relatives, classmates and old friends, so it was time to hang it up for good and let our son get to know his grandparents.

We came back to our hometown and I started riding after the MoCo’s 100th anniversary with my best friend and best man from our wedding. Now that I’m MediCare eligible, but not wanting to increase the national debt by wrecking out, I decided to go with the trike.

I’m not ashamed to admit that over the years, my riding skills aren’t what they were when I was fifty. I found myself riding less, and not enjoying it as much, especially in the rain. I’ve been down hard twice, once courtesy of a drunk driver and once being stupid and hitting a patch of ice (because it’s Wisconsin and we have plenty of it). I often said the Harley dealer parts department should sell canes!

So, to keep at it and enjoy the wind, the road, and my brothers who ride, it’s trike time! I went with vivid black because they’re faster and the Ultra doesn’t need a lot of parts, even though I managed to drop a couple grand in the process with pipes, XM radio, LED tail lights and going wireless with Bluetooth.

My motto is: I’m retired, go around me!
