Progressive Fork Springs...soon to be my newest addition...

Re: Progressive Fork Springs...soon to be my newest addition...

The issues on Progressive or stock (dual rate) springs versus Traxxion or Race Tech (single rate).

Dual rate sounds like a great idea. A softer rate for small bumps, a bigger rate for big ones. Thing is, on a heavy touring bike like the GL1800, most of the soft part of the rate on the Progressives is used up as the bike sags. Stock is worse, essentially all of the soft rate is used up. You also have to use more "preload" on the springs to get acceptable sag, which increases the very first part of the rate.

So, there's much to be said for just using single rate springs, to stop the bike from sagging too much, with less preload. It's a personal choice, but that's where I went.

EXACTLY! :banghead:

OK I tried to move the front end down with the front brake activated. The front moved down maybe 1/2". Pretty firm. Then activated the rear brake only. Could not budge the front end downward at all.

It actually doesn't matter if you apply the brake or not.

Functioning normally, the antidive only operates when the bike is moving, the force of the rotating disc is what activates the antidive. If the antidive is defective internally, it will lock up and stiffen the ride whether the brake is operated or not.

Replacing the Honda spring with a stiffer one is considered by many to improve the ride. The Honda spring sags so much, you have limited suspension travel. Which is why Honda added the antidive.

Many people think the real cure is to fix the issues with the damping on the Honda fork, which is pretty crude. Two companies whose products are highly regarded are Racetech and Traxxion. Both companies improve the damping, add stiffer springs, and disable the antidive. Racetech does it by modifying the Honda parts, Traxxion basically guts the internals and replaces them entirely.
