spark plugs

Dont know about plugs for bikes but a short time ago I fitted iridium plugs on my Subaru ea81.

The factory gap is around .039 thou ". Iridium for that size engine comes in 1.1mm and 0.8mm. That is arounf 44 thou" and 34 thou". so the right gap is somewhere in between.

Tried the .034 then went to the .044. .044 performed marginally better.

Anyway they last 40,000mls to 60,000mls. You dont adjust the gap ever!.

The way to go if you can get them to fit your Gold Wing.

Strange as it sounds . I had a 1981 Goldwing and it was very hard to start. I threw caution to the wind, said what the Heck and put in Split Fire. I swear to this day it made a world of difference. I put 20 on them and it started better than it ever did even with the extra 20,000 on it. Plugs in my 1997 Gold wing ??? I think original , I have never changed them , I put on 60,000 since I owned it.

The guys on the GL 1800 Road Riders web page have said they are using the Iridium NGK BKR6EIX (check to virify no. is correct) and they plan to run them 100,000 miles. I assume they will put antisieze on the spark plug so they will come out of the heads at 100,000 miles.
So far, from their web page, no one has had any problems with them, but they are saying they do cost more.
I would think if they do last 100,000 miles with no problems, then throw the cost out of the window. That would be great peace of mind.

With todays modern ignitions coil packs etc getting 100k out of a set of plugs is normal. Our police cars are not changed until they start mis-fireing. That normally happens around 110k+ plus all the idle time. Us bikers change plugs way to often (me included) because we are old school.
