Right now I use Google chrome for my favorite websites like this one and use it for searching other things. I use yahoo for email and that is it. My problem with google chrome I keep getting page unresponsive or it won't load plus a few other things I'm not happy about. I downloaded Edge and it is the same thing plus it is slower than google which they say it is fast now, can't prove it by me.

My desktop has 8.1 windows and is around 10 years old and I keep it updated, with the page unresponsive it says clean out exstensions, well I have one extension and that is webroot or at least that is all I can that comes up anyway.

Not really wanting to buy a new computer but at times I'm getting ready to shoot this one for target practice, if anyone has any ideas let me know, maybe I need to buy a new one but this one works, just very slow, not all the time, just part of the time but enough to make me mad.

FWIW, I use duckduckgo for a search engine. They claim not to track you, but Biden claims Trump is an ass, so choose yer poison. I'm using windows 10 on a laptop.

FYI you can still update to Win10 for free. Just go to Win10 update page to download.

You can also get some more speed if update to a solid state hardrive and increase your memory. Just did that to my 8 year old laptop and it is like a new computer.

BTW I also use duckduckgo.

I have Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon, Firefox Browser with uBlock origin and Startpage as the search. This is running on a Dell Latitude E6510 laptop.

Have you tried Firefox? May I suggest giving it a try, you might like it.

You could back up all your files and do a factory reset, this will bring your computer to 'Out of the box' just like the day you got it. Hopefully you have recovery media either disks or usb stick version. There is normally a recovery partition on the hard drive and a procedure in the operations manual on how to do a factory reset.

Safari.........

Google and sometimes Bing....And if i really want to be misunderstood Siri..:(.

I'm on Safari and stick to Bing ... I avoid anything with google or Yahoo if I can help it.

Since I use a private browser, except when going to TT ... I don't do cookies, or another "Stuff" that allows tracking.

From my post: Since I use a private browser, except when going to TT

I don't use a private window when on trike talk ... just for every thing else ... Kind of a pain to always put your password in, but, I sleep really well at night ... :D

Why do you use Bing? Just curious...not being the "techy" type...

Thanks for the replies, I loaded a few web sites and then deleted them, didn't like them, but basically now I'm having trouble getting my internet explorer to come up, have did 3 restores and not working, I think I'm going to buy a new computer.

Anyone have any ideas how to get my pics and other things I have this computer so I can load to new one if I do buy, that is the only reason I haven't bought a new one, not sure how to do all of this.

Transfer them to a jump drive for future reloading to another computer

Probably the easiest way is to get yourself a good sized usb drive and copy your stuff to it. When the new computer arrives, just transfer the pics, documents, videos. anything else you saved on the thumbdrive to the new puter.

I use firefox with the duckduckgo extension, which seems to work well. use Lockwise in Firefox to secure all login and passwords. Upgrading to Windows 10 64 bit operating system, 32Gb RAM, 1TB Solid State Drive and utilizing Firefox will super charge your computer. It takes some moolah to get speed for the log term. I replace Laptops every 5 years. As stated get 1 Tb flash drive or 1 Tb backup drive to store your pics and documents on for transfer.

All I have is old laptops. I add more memory and switch to Linux. If it has DDR3 memory sticks they're fairly inexpensive on ebay.

nucseal what do you do with the old laptops? I have one that runs Windows7, Linux Mint 19.3 and a neighbor gave me one that runs XP. I also have a Windows7 desktop. I gave away a desktop with Vista and loaded with games to a senior apartment complex. I had Windows10 and it lasted only 15 days and then I installed Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon and never looked back.

Update:

If you want to save money, download an ISO of Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon and install it on the 8.1 and you can use it for back up.

Update::: Not to sure what is going on, finally got online yesterday after many attempts, never could get interent explorer to come up but finally got google to come up, it was very slow also. I decided to try and load windows 10 and see if that would help on my computer, after 2 hours of loading and doing whatever it does, it finally got done and it failed for some reason, so I still have windows 8.1 but the good thing is everything is working good, everything comes up and it is a little faster also. Time will tell if I need a new pc and I'm not against it but would rather keep what I have and save me some money in the long run.

P.S. Also thank all of you for your replies, that is what I like about this forum, can't beat it

As long as its working that's great. Want it faster add more memory and a SSD. To get rid of unwanted stuff on the hard drive use Revo Uninstaller, you want the free version: https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-uninstaller-free-download/ Everything you delete is still on the hard drive this software removes all the leftovers. Also do a disk defragment and get all the bits and piece together. :clapping:

Thanks trike lady, I have enough trouble doing the pc thing let alone trying to put more money in memory and SSD, don't even know what SSD stands for so I will just keep what I have for now and run with what I have

SSD is a Solid State Drive it has no spinning platter and it will boot faster. As long as it works is all that matters.:)
