Need Advice

Taking a little 2 wk trip from Ohio to Colorado in July. Beside the idiots on the road, what should I be concerned or focus on? Riding an 08 gl1800 with a csc conversion. Any advice will help. Thanks!

I would suggest a wet vest for cooling as it may get hot in some places.

IF it is really hot, and IF you have sufficient lights on your trike's rear, ride at night! After the rally in NC last year, we went north to PA, coming back a week later, we rode from 6 pm to about 4 am the next day, made frequent stops, slept during the heat of the day, and made it back to Texas in two long days without heat stress like the year before!

Watch your fuel gauge, especially on long stretches out West. Start looking for fuel at 1/2 full. Stay hydrated. Stay in the right lane except to pass. Did I mention, 'stay hydrated'? Carry bottled water.

If you are in the Estes Park area take the long ride over Trail Ridge Road. Make SURE you carry a heavier jacket and gloves though. We went up there in July and it DID snow on us for a little bit.........

My best advise is don't over do the day, don't push it...I have put myself at risk on a two wheeler, riding to far in one day. When your body says it's enough then it's enough. 700 miles was my longest day and two thirds of that was back roads. After stopping for fuel about 100 miles from home I felt numb all over and knew I really shouldn't be riding.

I guess that's why I didn't do the iron butt rides, too risky for me and a bad back.

One of the mapping software, I believe it is goggle maps, you can map out the trip including where gas stations are.

</div>Along these lines...carry a small full gas can with you, just a gallon should save you. I would also recommend not riding much at night...animals are moving, as well as unfamiliar roads....good luck-take some pics and make us jealous that we dint get to come!!<img src="images/smilies/thumbup.gif" border="0" alt="" title="" class="inlineimg" />

The mention of driving at night has been made but I never drive at night out west, west of the Mississippi River, there are too many deer migrating from one place to feed to another place to feed.
To help you stay cool you might invest in a full set of air wings. I have Baker but whatever brand you choose is up to you. They will supply cool, at least moving, air and will deflect some of the cold air in the mountain passes.
I have ridden all over the CO and UT mountains and you will not find better sight seeing.
Stop often and enjoy the ride.
Drink all the Gator Aid you can and don't rush the trip, 400 miles in a day is plenty.

Talk about riding at night: With my 83 year old eyes I simply refuse to drive my mini-van after dark but strangely enough, I feel much more secure on the trike given visibility in all directions, if I absolutely MUST go somewhere after dark. But even so, I avoid nighttime travel. My farm and the roads surrounding it are grazing grounds for nearly invisible deer.
