Dealer....Really?

Unlike many, I haven't called the dealer a stealer for making an honest buck. That may just change. Droppped my 2014 TriGlide HD off for the 5k service with synthetic oil. I asked them to do the recalls and updates to the infotainment. I asked that the passing lights be flashed to remain pn with the high beams. I expected to pay something for this. Price posted is $330 for syn 3.

Got there to pick it up and the service dude said $468. I'm thinking he made a mistake. Here is the deal...1 hour labor at $85 to flash the lights. Told him that was absurd. He already had the digital tech hooked up, just punch a couple of keys and its done. He says I will have to see the gerneal manager to get this fixed. So I paid up and went to see the service manager. Asked him how iong at service it took to flash the lights? He agreed about two minutes and said he had to charge me 1/4 hour. I was ok and he refunded the difference. Got back home, read my bill closely and they charged me 1/4 hour to update the radio software, for two tie wraps for the brake line recall and $25 for "Shop Supplies" I am waitinng to get their service questionaire and I am going to share this tale with them. Also plan to write the general manager.

Sorry for the long rant but I feel raped. Anybody else get treated like this? I will let an hd dealer do the work as long as the warranty is in effect. After that , I have a manual and a shop with tools. I do it myself

Yea every time I bring it in there is something wrong with my bike. The second to last time I had it serviced everything seem to be fine 100 miles later I notice oil on the shed floor, brought it back in they found the engine oil pan and trans oil pan with loose bolts and some did not have locktight on the bolts. Went pick it up she told me she didn't make an insurance claim So I won't have to pay a $50 deductible. I told he you think they would check these things during services.:p

One of the biggest reasons I do my own wrenching, my dad and I grew tired of being raped. What we have saved over the years from doing our own work has more than paid for the tools.

I had a small shop.. [Not motorcycles] And when ever a customer came in with a job,
They would almost always ask 3 questions .

1} Can you do the job?

2} When can you do the job?

3} How much will the job cost?

If my customer didn't like any of my answers, They would walk out the door and find someone else to do the job... Made for less hard felling's after.......

was quoted 330 to do the service without flashing the lights. figured maybe 1/2 hour labor @85. didnt expect it to add up to $468

Know what, I have worked in "dealerships" since 1966. John Deere, Ford, Honda Motorcycle, Lincoln-Mercury and back to Ford again. Are all dealerships perfect? ABSOLUTELY NOT! But, are they all crooks? Again, absolutely not. I have met WAY more crooks in the "independent market" than ever in dealerships.

The mindset that some of you have is that you must NEVER go back to the dealer for anything that you actually have to 'pay' for. Well look around friend and enjoy them while they're still here cause they'll be gone tomorrow. It amazes me how a lot of you think that you are the only ones allowed to make a living.

Do I search out the best deal I can when buying a product? You bet. But do I blame the dealer for product short-comings? No. Now, if the dealer fails to provide me the service I paid for then we have a problem.

OK, I'm done. Sorry, just had to vent a little. We now return you to your normally scheduled program .....

For sure my friend!
I still cant believe its a 90 plus dollars an hr. for a parts changer to work on your bike?

You expect a parts changer to do mechanic work?:D

My question is, if it was a recall item why did they charge you anything at all? Whenever I have taken a vehicle in for a recall item, it has been repaired/replaced at ZERO cost to me.
Now, $25 for a couple zip ties........hhmm sounds like they are on Obama Care.....

:Agree:Recall work should be zero cost to the owner, I've never paid one thin dime for anything done as a recall. I'd be touching base with Harley Davidson about this, I bet they would find it interesting.

NOW...GET Your panties out of a wad and reread my post. never said i didnt expect him to make a profit, i asked him to flash my lights and expected to pay reasonably, 1/4 hour. it takes 5 minutes max. he charged me to update the radio. trike is under warranty. $25 for shopp supplies? do yu go into the restaurant and pay for restaurant supplies? and doc fees when you bought the bike? just two monety makers for the dealer. I generally service mine at the dealer always unless I am doing a 2500 mile oil change for some reason. I t is not just the hd dealer that charges shop supplies it is an industry money stream

I'd be contacting Harley customer service about the shop supplies on the warranty. Warranty work is covered 100%, there should be no charge to the customer.

I agree 100%. If it's something I can do, I will. A man's got to know his limitations. We have two Harley dealerships in Las Vegas, I will never return to the one I bought the trike from. The other has my business when I need them. i know going in it will cost me but I very specific when speaking with the service writer what my expectations are of their techs.

I know this doesn't apply to warranty work but 65.00 for a manual and a little mechanical ability , maybe a friend too will save a lot of money and give you satisfaction . ThumbUp JUST MY TWO CENTS not for everyone .

Like I said in prior threads, find a shop you trust, I know in some regions that is very difficult to do. I had two shops I trusted, one to work the front end of the trike, Goldwing, the other to work on the conversion, Hannigan.
It is sad to say, the front end shop, Jim, passed away at a very young age, now to find another Goldwing specialist. How hard is this, it is going to be very difficult in my area, but I will not give up. Mean time, the conversion shop has my business, which is very good, but very..very..pricie..$85 per hour!

Update

The service manager called and after hearing my concerns agreed I was overchargeed on fashing the lights, radio upgrade should have been free, $25 shop supplies generated by computer automatically based on total labor and cleanup tech missed the boat by not cleaning up oil spilled when filter was removed. Has agreed to refund some $ when I come in. I will just be ultra vigilant when they give me an estimate for service.
