I just bought a Masterbuilt electric smoker, haven't put it together yet but was wondering if any of you use any of the commercial rubs out there or roll your own. We use a lot of different spices in our normal cooking but I've never smoked anything. Looking forward to any and all suggestions.

I agree with Illini_Triker. Too much salt in commercial rubs.

Here's the one I make. It's a little warm.

2 tablespoons Garlic powder

2 tablespoons Onion Powder

2 tablespoons Salt

2 tablespoons Cayene pepper

2 tablespoons Black pepper

2 tablespoons White pepper

1 cup Brown Sugar

1/2 cup Paprika

Add or subtract any of the ingredients until you get it where you like it.

We're not on a salt restricted diet and by surfing around today I found out the Dizzy Pig Rubs have very little salt in them, they have some sample specials that I might try. I'm flying back to Ohio tomorrow to finish up my Mom's estate, and I'll find out what my son-in-law uses, he has made some really good smoked stuff when we've been up there. Still open for any comments.

Smokingmeatforum.com is a great source

www.smokingmeatforums.com is a great source of info, if you haven't checked it out yet.

Don't forget to "season" the smoker before you officially use it. Also get some of the spray on grill lube (like Pam) so grid clean up is easier.

Have a ball experimenting with the Masterbuilt, love mine! ThumbUp

Thanks for the link Jim, really looks like an interesting site to explore.

For me it depends, On my pork butts I usually make my own. For ribs I like the Texas BBQ Rub, I have a few different things I do to poultry. Both store bought & my own. Always nice to try different things.

I've experimented with several over the years.. The guys here are right to much salt in commercial rubs. The links listed for bbq-brethren and smoking meat forum are great. Also check out your local meat market. ThumbUp
