Goldwing 1500 Trike (1997)

When I ride my trike on the highway at 65-70mph it rides fine but after about 25 minutes it goes down to about 50-55 mph. If I stop on side the road then start back again it will go back to 70mph for a few minutes then back to 50mph again. I thought it could be bag gas so I put new gas in but it does the same thing. It is almost like when it is getting near 25-30 minutes it will start do it. It will get me home at 50-60 mph but that is it. I am trying to see if this could be an engine problem or still something with the gas.

Bryan.....Welcome to Trike-Talk.....:wave4:....Make sure your gas tank is venting properly ,

What you are describing is classic signs of a air bound gas tank...

Hi Bryan, :welcome: to Trike Talk

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem

As already mentioned, have a look at your fuel cap first, have you had any work done to your trike recently?

Try running some SeaFoam in your gas also, it could be also a build up of varnish in the carbs from the crappy gas we are forced to use

Hello & :welcome: to Trike Talk. :clapping:

Have you checked the hose that leads from the gas cap to the open air for an obstruction or pinch?

The only thing I did was take the gas cap off and see if it would work but it did the same thing.

Did you drive with the cap off?.. I had a 73 Pinto that did the same thing… Caveman style I just drilled a hole through the gas cap. And vented it . Didn’t have a problem after that.

Yes I took the cap off and ran about 3 minutes and it started doing the same thing as before. Falling down from 70mph to 50mph.

This could be sticky floats in the carbs, hanging up from varnish build up and not filling the bowl completely

Could also be bad gas, it happens

Sure sounds like a fuel issue. I'd drain all the fuel, change the fuel filter, fill with fresh fuel treated with an additive such as SeaFoam. Just curious, was the bike sitting for an extended period of time? If so, today's poor gas will play havoc on your carburetors. Having them cleaned is not inexpensive. Trying new, treated fuel is your least expensive option before getting into $$$$$. Good luck..... Jim

Easiest to try is fuel filter.Once i decided to let to the big dog eat after coming off the dragon and when I hit about 70 or so she shut off but picked up again before I came to a stop.I nursed home the rest of way at 55-60 and changed the fuel filter and never had that happen again. The other though that is less likely but the fuel petcock but I really don't think it would act like that.Possibly a fuel pump going south.

Since you haven't mentioned anything about the engine shaking, making strange noises etc. Then I'd say the brakes are draggin. No play in the brake linkage,or plugged relief port in the master. As the fluid expands from heat it has nowhere to go and starts applying the brakes.

Welcome to TT from Ohio.. Hope you get it fixed soon. Stop by & let us know what the prob was. Best of luck fixing the issue.

The more I think about this, I don't think it is a gas problem because it always happens after about 20-25 minutes. I am thinking about what you said on your sticky floats in the carbs. I was also thinking it might be a spark plug problem and making the engine go on 3 cylinders when it runs for a while. Any ides?

Plugs are cheap, change them and try it

If you look close at the old plugs they can tell a tale

I am going to take all the gas out and put new gas and put in a new fuel filter and see what it does. The fuel filter does look old and dirty so I am thinking you might be on it. Thanks!
