Deadwood Trike Rally 2018

OK - thanks for the info. Guess I will reassess my plans as I am not really interested in a rally consisting of mostly Can-Ams. Still plan on hitting the area again this year, will probably change my room reservation to different time frame. The best part of the Sturgis rally last year was the riding opportunities in the area and that can be done anytime......

Dave, I own a 2017 Harley Tri Glide and a 2015 Can-Am Spyder F3S. Don't tell me that you are going to run from me when I ryde up on my Can-Am? I can show you my tattoo that says "Mother" :p Oh, and I have the requisite black leather that I can use for either trike. I also used to be a prison shrink so I can use colorful language with the best of them MOFO's. If you find yourself riding with Can-Am trikers, I can assure you that most of the males will not be wearing any pink-colored items and many will ride as spirited as any other triker. Now, OTOH, I have noticed that the women who ryde their own Can-Am's seem to be pretty good looking.

Well Capt., I can assure you that neither my wife nor I have any tats or black leather. I'm a firm believer in an individual's right to his own choice of ride and I always wave to you Can-Amers. ThumbUp

Hey Dave,

WE LOVE THEM ALL...! (Trikes & Bikes, that is) Regardless of what you ride, you're welcome at the 4th Annual Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally. I didn't fully realize the uneven mixture prior to attending last years event. What I noticed was that there seemed to be a large number of inexperienced riders on non-Harley trikes. The group rides were too large in the first place and then you mix in folks on different machines with barely any riding experience....let's just say I feel stupid it took me two rides before dropping out for the rest of the week.

Mirider, you are correct about the riding opportunities that can be done anytime. We finished up our week with two other couples doing all the featured rides solo and it was great. Not to discourage anyone with a Harley TG from attending this event if they have never been. But you should realize exactly what kind of event it is. I wasn't really prepared to do group rides with vehicles as big as my Mini Cooper.

Joe said it well. We ended up doing the same. I see they will not do the large group rides this summer. We enjoyed the get-togethers at the park & will attend this year on our Tri. The sewing machines don't bother me,hell ya dont even hear them :D Met some very nice folks on the other 3-wheelers.

I too have been following this thread with interest. It has been a long time since I have been there on a bike and we are thinking about the rally so we can ride and meet everyone with like interests. Although I have nothing against other trike/bikes (used to, when I rode in my younger days, but I grew up!), I would like to see a variety of brands there and several like my own (HD) just so I can compare notes and look at what others have done to theirs. I really enjoy riding and sitting down with others to share stories and have found that we all usually have similar tales.

As the time gets closer, we will nail down where and when we are going to come out for the ride. It all depends on my main work schedule since I have not received it yet this year, which starts in March, other than I will be in Deadwood a couple months after the rally working with jeeps and I may just bring my trike out then and take some time to ride.

If you decide on the Rally, look me up. Will be there the entire time.

Being new to trikes (but definitely not to motorcycles) I was enthused about the rally. Then after reading several comments about the lack of diversity of brands and the group rides I began to have second thoughts. So I went directly to the source, the rally coordinator, and she gave me permission to post her reply to my email inquiry. Here it is in its entirety:

"Hi Jerry

Thanks for the questions but truly you should not be concerned. This is not a Can-Am Spyder rally – It was never intended to be that and it is not promoted as such. For the first two years of the rally BRP stepped up to the plate and gave us a $10,000 sponsorship. That is more than Harley or Honda or Polaris or any other dealership has done to date. That being said…..we still promote for and want this to be an all -inclusive trike rally In 2017 Harley Davidson was a sponsor and we had 70 Harley trikes here. We expect and want that number to grow. And to answer your question – NO…everyone is treated exactly the same because we all put our pants on the same way (as far as I know) LOL

Here’s some insight on what I have seen: The Can-Am Spyder riders seem to jump at doing their registration sooner – they have close knit riding clubs and do a great job on their social media interactions etc. The HD riders are more laid back and quite honestly it is not until the rally gets closer that they start sending in their registrations. So it looks like it is just a Can-Am Spyder event when it is truly not…nor is it the plan that it will ever be an exclusive event,

We advertise in the Harley Davidson Magazine and will do so again this year – we have a close relationship with the Black Hills Harley Davidson dealership in Rapid City and we want to grow our relationship with all the trike dealerships, conversion manufacturers and the like to make this an ALL TRIKE-inclusive event.

My past experience of being a chamber director does not allow me to exclude and I am proud to be proactive in getting all types, makes and models at this rally.

All that being said – Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will do more posts about Harley and other trikes to ensure that everyone knows this is a fun rally for any trike owner or enthusiasts.

The Can-Am registrants have asked for some tune-up education classes and special socials in 2018 – We try to accommodate their requests but they are only given so much time out of the rally for their own thing. If HD or Honda or Polaris want the same – we try and accommodate them too. In fact during the first year we had a special Slingshot breakfast because they were brand new and so many of them came to the rally….they wanted their own time to chat and show off.

This is a long answer to say NO…you will not be excluded at all or made to feel different – not on this gal’s watch!!

Take care Jerry and I hope you come to the rally and see for yourself how well everyone gets along.

I truly appreciate your question…it gives me an opportunity to show my conviction.

Take care,

Teresa

Now with all that being said I still have a discomfort about riding in groups with folks i do not know and am not accustomed to riding with. So like others have said I may do the rides with the few riding buddies that will be accompanying me to the rally. But I do hope to meet some nice folks no matter what brand they ride and hopefully ride some roads I may not have otherwise known about.

I like the response Teresa, sent you. I know what she says is true as I myself & a few others have our hotel resv, but have not done the registration. Also, one change they are doing this year is smaller group rides & a "ride with a local" to eliminate the large rides. I guess they listened to some us & the displeasure with the rides last year. Hope to see you there. I do know the host hotel is full already, but call Teresa & she will try to help when a cancellation comes in. Sturgis is only 12 miles away & one of my riding partners got a resv there & a wait-list with Teresa for the host hotel. We made some great friends there & I feel sure you would enjoy yourself. "pmar6004" on this site is a great guy & one of the coordinators also.

Thanks Bill. I do have reservations at the Best Western just down the road from the host hotel. Planning to attend with a couple of my riding friends and their spouses.

Hi Jerry,

I too read Teresa's response to your concerns and I hope others read it as well. Nothing could or should be said that the Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally caters to any one particular make or model of trike. Anyone that holds that belief has not attended the rally. This will be my 3rd time that I've attended the rally and it never ceases to get better each and every year. Teresa does a super job in organizing the event and listens to those that have attended for ideas of how to make it more inviting, interesting and enjoyable to its participants. I'm glad to have played a small part in that. Thanks for your decision to attend the rally and for allowing me the opportunity to put in my 2 cents. I look forward to another successful year. (Yes)

That may well be true but the fact is, latest registration numbers reported on FB show approximately 75% of trikes signed up are Can-Ams. Sounds like a Can-Am gathering to me....... I don't have any particular problem with that though, it is what it is.

Well we're six months out and Teresa did say the Can-Am folks are tight on their social media and tend to register early. That sounds reasonable to me since they are probably on brand specific forum(s) while us here are on an open brand forum. I'm not aware of a specific Harley trike forum but if I find one we should promote the rally there.

Hope us Harley riders start to register soon and bring the numbers up.

Not sure of a HD Trike ONLY forum either, ultra. This forum is not an HD only either, just has a couple "sections" for HD. I am not intimidated to ride at a rally that is only HD. Hell, one year I even attended a "WINGDING"rally & had fun. Hope to see you out there.

Mailed my registration for the D3W Rally yesterday. Looking forward to meeting some of the fine folks from this site up there. ThumbUp

I made this statement back in post# 39 but maybe it got overlooked. The major Spyder Rally in the West has be the Red Rocks Rally in St.George,Ut (there are a few Harleys too). That rally is taking a vacation for the 2018 riding season and those of us in attendance at the closing dinner were encouraged to attend the Deadwood Trike Rally,so I am sure that many went and registered for Deadwood and that may account for the large number Spyders showing up. There should be plenty of Harley Tri Glide riders as time gets closer. I think there are a lot more of you then us. I am looking forward to going to my 1st Deadwood rally. I have been trying to get there since the 1st one,but something has always interfered. But, I can't go to the TRA 30th anniversary Rally, babysitting grandkids. No Red Rock Rally so I have Vacation time I need to use somewhere.

I love rallys,I have been to several. I have learned that I have my best rides when I ride a little behind the main group, stop where I wish and get back on my schedule. I just poach the maps, then meet the group if I wish at the destination,or that night at the group dinner. I have ridden in large in groups, and still do,but as I get older the situational awareness and reactions slow down.

So Come one come all and lets enjoy the Black Hills on 3 wheels.

We're going

The only spyders I don't care for have 8 legs. This will be our first time but my wife, my HD trike and I plan to be there. The Deadwood Bunkhouse hotel DID still have rooms.
